Coarse woody debris
- This pool is the trees that have died and fallen to the ground. Typically this include only material >1 inch (2.5 cm) in diameter, some definitions have a larger cut off.

Standing dead wood
- This pool is comprised of dead trees that remian standing. These trees typicall decay more slowly than those that fall to the ground.

Mineral soil organic carbon
- This component accounts for the organic material incorporated into mineral soil. This can include particulate organic matter or organic matter adsorbed onto mineral surfaces. By definition this is the soil fraction that passes through a 2 mm seive.
