Carbon Estimation
Coarse woody debris (CWD) is typically measured using a point-intercept line transect method. A line transect of a known distance is run diagonally across the sampling plot. A count of the number of pieces of downed wood >1 inch (2.5 cm) is made and the diameter size class of each piece of CWD intersecting with the line transect is recorded. The diameter size class of the CWD is measured using a tape held above the log at the widest section of the log. Many methodologies also request the length of the CWD be included as well as a description of the decay class of the log. The decay information is used to estimate the density of the CWD that in turn is used to estimate the mass of carbon.
